Kentucky Derby Wreath

Giddy up!!!

It is the “Run for the Roses!!”

Scroll to end of page for directions.

My family is Always Dreaming (5-1) of big winnings when it is Kentucky Derby time! And today is the 143rd run for the 544 roses that make up the wreath placed on the winner. But not all studs will be running the race, one will be singing the National Anthem! Harry Connick Jr. will be throbbing our hearts as he honors the nation.  As Harry is Girvin (15-1) us his rendition, I won’t be Looking At Lee (20-1), I will be lookin’ at him and hoping for a J Boys Echo (20-1) of other great hits by Harry!

There is no overwhelming favorite heading into today’s race, but this Derby inspired wreath I created is a favorite of mine. This wreath is no Practical Joke (20-1), but a Classic Empire (4-1) of a decoration! It was not placed at the Battle of Midway (30-1), but give an Irish War Cry (6-1) as you hang it Untrapped (30-1) and then get McCraken (6-1) on a great time! The wreath is sure to Patch (20-1) a dull moment; but when that slow moment does come, Irap (20-1) out a beat with my Son(neteer)(20-1) so well it brings us Thunder Snow (20-1)! The Derby is the fastest two minutes in sports, raced in that State of Honor (30-1) Kentucky, Hence (15-1) you must be Fast and Accurate (50-1) as you plan your day. Let my wreath inspire your creative side as you root for any of the magnificent three year-olds, including Gunnevera (15-1), Tapwrit (20-1), and Gormley (15-1).

This is such an easy craft and so fun to create.  All you need is a wreath, artificial roses, floral wire, floral picks/sticks, a toy horse and a pretty bow.

Take your floral wire and attach the floral stem to the wreath. You will need to cut the stem to the point it will fit securely to the wreath. I found red roses at Michaels and quite cheap, I might add.

After you attach the roses, attach a floral pick to a leg of the horse. Wrap the floral wire around both and attach to the wreath. My horse was on the heavy side, so I did 2 legs.

Lastly, add a pretty bow to finish.  Be creative and make one for the upcoming Kentucky Derby! My wreath hung on my china cabinet but you can place it anywhere your little heart desires.  Have fun!
